Falcons’ win streak hits the breaks

Air Force ran into a brick wall Friday night. Its name was Charles Williams.

The Canisius goaltender made 38 saves and the Golden Griffins ended the Falcons’ six-game win streak with a 4-1 Atlantic Hockey victory at Cadet Arena on Friday night.

Canisius (8-10-4, 7-4-3 AHC) scored four first-period goals but totaled just 12 shots in a game Air Force (13-7-3, 10-4-1) dominated for long stretches.

“They were opportunistic tonight,” Air Force coach Frank Serratore said via the school’s official website. “We didn’t give them many chances, but we dropped some bombs tonight. Give them credit, when we gave them a chance, they capitalized.

“In the second and third periods, we controlled everything we could control. We didn’t take away their goalies eyes very well and he saw a lot of pucks.”

The Falcons outshot their guests 30-6 in the final two periods, including 19-1 in the second.

All five goals came in the first period.

Jesse Pereira‘s tap-in goal 3:11 into the game was answered by the Falcons’ Jordan Himley, who scored his team-high 11th goal after Matt Serratore won a puck battle, got the puck to Kyle Haak, who found Himley open.

Canisius took over from there, getting goals from David Bennett and Dylan McLaughlin in a 1:34 stretch midway through the period. The latter ended goalie Shane Starrett‘s night after four shots on goal. Just 50 seconds later, Casey Jerry scored on a redirection past Billy Christopoulos (seven saves).
