Colonials keep AFA offense grounded

One night after scoring six goals, Air Force could only generate one at Robert Morris in a 2-1 loss that split the Atlantic Hockey series.

Alex Tonge scored an even-strength goal and a power-play goal for the Colonials, while Tyler Ledford struck on the power play for the Falcons (14-8-4, 11-5-2 AHC), who remained in first place in the league.

Billy Christopoulos made 23 saves for Air Force, as did Francis Marotte, his counterpart for the Colonials, who bounced back after giving up three goals in roughly 24 minutes Friday.

“That game was for men only,” AFA coach Frank Serratore said. “That was a tough battle. The shots were pretty even and they managed to score the only even-strength goal. We have to score more than one goal to win games.

“Billy was solid and gave us a chance to win. We had some chances and didn’t convert. We worked hard and competed hard, but have to find a way to make a couple more plays.”

The game marked the fourth time in seven appearances that Christopoulos limited an AFA foe to one or two goals. In the five games that he has a loss or no-decision in the Falcons have scored just nine goals.

Air Force returns to Cadet Arena next weekend for one of the biggest series of the year when second-place Army West Point rolls into town. The teams split a hotly contested series in November in New York. Army won the first game 4-2, while Air Force took the second 3-1.
